Aker Yards S.A was founded in 1861 by the "French Line" Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. It became an Alstom subsidiary in 1984. The shipyard has a turnover of about € 1.2bn and works for the main shipowners of the world. Aker Yards S.A. offers a large range of vessels: cruise ships, ferries, LNGs, high-speed ferries, navy ships, offshore rigs, yachts, sophisticated vessels. The company's strategic plan named "CAP 21+" led Aker Yards S.A. to success on the cruise ship market. 5000 employees and 800 companies (suppliers and subcontractors) succeeded in this Aker Yards S.A. project. Builder of the "mythical" liners NORMANDIE and FRANCE, Aker Yards S.A. is one of the most famous specialised shipyards for building cruise ships. Futher to SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS delivered in 1987, orders for 30 cruise ships from major shipowners have been placed with Aker Yards S.A. Comfort and pleasure, care of the passengers, and environmental caution lead these floating palaces concept. In November 2000, the emblematic Queen Mary 2 was ordered. Nowadays, Aker Yards S.A. is the supplier of the major shipowners of cruise ships: Carnival, NYK, P&O, RCCL.
