Fincantieri S.p.A. is the heir to the tradition of Italian
shipbuilding. Two hundred years of history marked by the construction of over 7,000 ships
which, from Alaska to the Caribbean, have taken, and continue to take,
the image of Italian industry out into the world.
The hallmark of this tradition has always been enhanced performance and the
search for new solutions in design and construction, within a framework of
strategic partnerships and international agreements.
Fincantieri's 9,500 employees mainly design, build, and sell cruise ships,
all kinds of ferries, military surface vessels, and submarines.
The organization is built around three Business Units:
- Cruise Ships Business Unit
with
shipyards in Monfalcone (near Trieste),
Venice - Marghera and Genoa Sestri;
- Merchant Ships Business
Unit
with shipyards in Ancona, Castellammare
di Stabia
(near Naples) and Palermo;
- Naval Vessels Business Unit
with shipyards in Muggiano (near
La Spezia) and Riva Trigoso (near Genoa).
The company is one of the largest naval construction groups in Europe.
Today Fincantieri leads the cruise ships and ferries world-wide markets,
with shares of about 50 and 16 percent respectively.
Fincantieri is headquartered in Trieste, where is also located its main design office,
the largest in Europe. Another design centre is located in Genoa, headquarter of
the Naval Vessels Business Unit. The company is able to build complete ships at
any of its eight shipyards.
During 2002 at Fincantieri's shipyards, plant and equipment were upgraded to meet
the efficiency targets set by the company. In particular, activities were directed
towards promoting plant configurations in line with the process technologies
considered to be most effective for the product type assigned to the yard.
