HDW: Our History
In 1838, Johann Schweffel and August Ferdinand Howaldt founded their mechanical engineering plant and ironworks in Kiel under the name "Schweffel & Howaldt". In 1851, during the German-Danish war, Schweffel & Howaldt built the world's first operational submarine, the "Brandtaucher", constructed on the same basic principles that apply to submarines today. At the beginning of the 20th century the "Howaldtswerke" ranked among the most important German shipyards. With various owners, changing legal status, construction sites in Hamburg and Kiel, the yard survived both World Wars. The yard received its present name "Howaldtswerke-Deutsch Werft GmbH" in 1968 with the amalgamation of the "Kieler Howaldtswerke AG" with "Howaldtswerke Hamburg AG" and "Deutsche Werft AG".
